Mythology of Saint Barbara:
She is said to have joined Christianity despite the persecution of Christians.
Her father, who promised her to a bridegroom, had her imprisoned in a tower specially built for her to protect her from Christianity and other suitors.
As she escaped from the tower, a crevice opened and Barbara was able to flee through.
Later, her father found her and beheaded her with a sword.
Thereupon the father was struck by lightning and died immediately.
Because she escaped through a crevice, she became the patron saint of the miners.
Many other guilds and industries took her story as a reason to choose her as her patron.
Her main attribute is the tower in which she was trapped and therefore many pictures and figures are made with the symbol of the tower.
Other attributes often found in pictures and figures of the holy Barbara are the chalice, the sword, the book, and the lamp.
Each of these symbols has its own meaning.
